He drove Cora to school when Emily was in treatment. He learned which lunch she liked and which one she only ate because she’d run out of better options. He fixed a broken cabinet door in Emily’s apartment when she came home for the first time and found him in her kitchen with a screwdriver, which made her stand in the doorway for a full ten seconds before she could say anything.

“You don’t have to do all of this,” she told him, for the third or fourth time.

“I know,” he said, for the third or fourth time.

She stopped telling him that after a while.

By spring, Emily was out of active treatment and into recovery — a slower, quieter process that looked, from the outside, like ordinary life returning. But the ordinary life that returned was different from the one before the hospital. It had Dane in it now, steadily and without drama, in the way of someone who has decided where he is and doesn’t need to discuss it further.

On a Thursday evening in April, Cora came into the living room where the two of them were sitting with the particular purposefulness of a child who has made a decision.

“I want to know something,” she said.

“Okay,” Dane said.

“The tattoo,” she said. “It says Mom’s name.”

“It does,” Dane said.

Cora looked at him with those steady, measuring eyes. “Did you know, when you got it, that you’d be looking for her this long?”

Dane considered the question honestly.

“I didn’t know I was looking,” he said. “I thought I was just remembering.”

Cora absorbed this with a small nod, the way she absorbed most things — quietly, completely, filing it away somewhere it would be useful later.

“That’s the same thing,” she said, and went back to her room.

Emily was looking at him when he turned back. There was something in her expression that was close to laughter and close to tears and was actually neither of those things — it was just the particular face of a person who recognizes themselves in a moment and feels known.

“She’s right,” Emily said quietly.

“She usually is,” Dane said.

Outside, the April light was doing what April light does — long and gold and indifferent to how much time had been lost, generous only with what it had to offer right now. It came through the window and laid itself across the floor in a warm rectangle, and somewhere in the next room Cora was playing a song on her phone, something upbeat and a little too loud, the sound of a child who has stopped being careful about taking up space.

Dane looked down at his forearm. At the compass rose. At the crack along one edge that had always been part of the design — not an error, but a choice, because he had asked the artist to put it there deliberately. A perfect compass doesn’t mean anything, he had explained once, to someone who asked. It’s the cracked one that’s been somewhere.

The name underneath it had always pointed in one direction.

It had just taken a nine-year-old girl, two bus transfers, and a bar full of bikers who knew enough to get out of the way — to finally bring him home.
