A Drilling Mistake Made a Louisiana Lake Swallow an Oil Rig and 11 Barges

At first, the drilling crew thought they were dealing with a stuck drill pipe.

Their rig was standing on barges in Lake Peigneur, a broad but remarkably shallow body of water near New Iberia, Louisiana. When the equipment refused to move on the morning of November 20, 1980, the workers applied more force. Then the platform began to tilt.

The crew abandoned the rig and reached the shore. Before long, they watched the 150-foot derrick disappear into water that had previously been no more than about 11 feet deep.

The drilling operation had opened a pathway into the Diamond Crystal salt mine beneath the lake. Water rushed underground, dissolved the surrounding salt and enlarged the opening. The resulting whirlpool swallowed the rig, 11 barges, another drilling platform and part of the nearby landscape. It also reversed the Delcambre Canal, pulling salt water inland from the Gulf of Mexico. Remarkably, everyone escaped without a reported human injury.

Two Industries Were Operating Around the Same Lake

Before the disaster, Lake Peigneur covered approximately 1,300 acres beside Jefferson Island in Iberia Parish. Although wide, it was shallow enough that the disappearance of a massive drilling rig initially seemed physically impossible.

Two industries were operating around and beneath the lake.

Oil companies had explored the Jefferson Island area for decades. On the surface, drilling platforms searched for petroleum deposits below the lakebed. Far below them, miners worked inside a massive underground salt formation.

Salt mining at Jefferson Island began in the early 20th century. Diamond Crystal Salt Company acquired the operation in the 1950s and developed a network of large underground chambers supported by pillars of unmined salt. Some passages were wide enough for vehicles and heavy mining equipment.

These were not small natural caves. They were industrial spaces extending through the salt dome beneath the lake and neighboring land. On November 20, miners were working below while a drilling crew operated above them.

The physical arrangement created an unusual risk. The mine normally remained dry because layers of rock and salt separated it from the lake. As long as that barrier remained intact, the two operations could exist near one another.

Once water found a path into the mine, however, the situation could change rapidly.

Salt dissolves in water. A narrow leak through ordinary rock may remain relatively stable, but flowing water passing through salt can continuously enlarge its own channel. The larger the opening becomes, the more water it carries, accelerating the erosion.

The U.S. Geological Survey has described this general danger in flooded salt mines: an errant drill hole can allow surface water to enter a mine, and the surrounding salt can dissolve as the flow expands. In extreme cases, an initial leak can become a torrent capable of permanently destroying the mine.

That process was about to unfold beneath Lake Peigneur.

The Drilling Platform Began Leaning Toward the Water

The crew was drilling an exploratory oil well for Texaco with equipment operated by Wilson Brothers Corporation.

When the drill assembly became stuck at a relatively shallow depth, the workers attempted to free it. The resistance was unusual, but a stuck drill did not immediately suggest that the lake itself was in danger.

Then the rig began to move.

The platform tilted toward the water, and the crew heard disturbing noises from below. Recognizing that the structure might collapse, the workers released equipment and evacuated to shore.

Their decision gave them only a limited margin of safety.

The rig continued leaning until the platform overturned. It then vanished into the lake. Witnesses were stunned because the derrick was far taller than the known depth of the water.

The only explanation was that the lakebed was no longer supporting it.

Below the surface, lake water was entering the salt mine through the opening created during the drilling operation. As the salt dissolved, the original pathway widened, and surrounding sections of the mine began to fail.

The lake was no longer behaving like a lake.

It was becoming the upper entrance to an enormous underground drainage system.

Miners Raced Toward the Only Way Out

The danger was even greater below ground.

Workers inside the Diamond Crystal mine began noticing water entering areas that had always been dry. The sound of equipment and fuel drums moving in the advancing flow reportedly helped alert them that something was seriously wrong.

The miners had to travel through the underground passages toward the mine shaft and its elevator. They could not simply climb directly to the surface. Everyone below depended on reaching the same limited exit before the water cut off the route.

The elevator carried only a small number of people during each trip. As one group rose, the others waited below while water continued entering the mine.

Despite those conditions, all of the miners escaped.

The oil-rig crew had also reached safety, and people working around the lake moved away from the shoreline as the ground began collapsing. Contemporary reports emphasized the most extraordinary result of the disaster: despite the scale of destruction, no human life was lost and no serious human injury was reported.

Once the last miners reached the surface, there was little anyone could do to stop the flooding.

The mine contained a vast system of chambers. As water poured into those empty spaces, the lake level dropped and currents strengthened around the opening. The flow dissolved more salt, carried debris underground and destabilized additional sections of the shoreline.

A small drilling breach had developed into a collapse large enough to drain an entire lake.

The Whirlpool Began Pulling in Everything Nearby

As the opening expanded, the surface of Lake Peigneur began rotating around a growing vortex.

The whirlpool reportedly reached approximately a quarter of a mile across. Water, mud and debris moved toward the center while the shoreline broke apart.

The first drilling rig was already gone. Another drilling platform was pulled into the collapse. A loading dock, vehicles, trees and sections of nearby property followed.

Eleven barges connected to activity along the canal were drawn toward the whirlpool. A tugboat was also swallowed. Roughly 70 acres of shoreline and land around Jefferson Island reportedly disappeared or were damaged as the lake drained into the mine.

The event unfolded so quickly that witnesses struggled to understand what they were seeing.

Lake Peigneur had held billions of gallons of water. Now that water was vanishing beneath the surface. Objects that should have rested safely in a shallow lake were disappearing into mine chambers more than a thousand feet below.

Parts of Jefferson Island began collapsing as the underground salt structure failed. Trees slid into the moving water with the soil beneath them. Buildings and equipment near the unstable shoreline were damaged or lost.

The disaster did not resemble an ordinary flood, where water rises and spreads outward.

Here, the water was moving downward.

The lake was effectively draining through its own floor.

The Delcambre Canal Suddenly Flowed Backward

Before the accident, the Delcambre Canal carried water away from Lake Peigneur toward Vermilion Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.

As the lake emptied, its water level fell below that of the canal. The direction of the hydraulic gradient changed, and the canal began flowing backward.

Water from the Gulf system was pulled inland toward the collapsing lake. For a time, the reverse flow formed a large waterfall where the canal entered the newly deepened basin.

The canal also carried barges toward the vortex. Eleven were swallowed, although nine later returned to the surface after the turbulence subsided and the lake began refilling.

The returning salt water fundamentally changed Lake Peigneur.

Before November 1980, it had been a shallow freshwater lake. After draining into the mine and refilling from the canal, it became much deeper and increasingly brackish.

Compressed air trapped inside the flooding mine was forced upward as water filled the chambers. Witnesses reported dramatic eruptions of air and water from the lake as underground pressure escaped.

Within a few days, the most violent movement had ended. The surface again resembled a lake, but it was not the same body of water that had existed before the drilling began.

Areas that had once been approximately 11 feet deep now reached depths of around 200 feet. The freshwater environment had been replaced by a system influenced by salt water entering through the canal.

The Exact Chain of Errors Became a Legal Dispute

The physical cause of the flooding was clear in broad terms: the drilling operation created a connection between Lake Peigneur and the salt mine beneath it.

Determining exactly why the well reached the mine proved more contentious.

Diamond Crystal filed a federal lawsuit almost immediately, accusing the drilling operation of puncturing the salt structure and destroying the mine. Texaco disputed responsibility and argued that its crew had drilled at the location provided through the project’s mapping and permitting process.

Later accounts frequently describe a mapping or coordinate error that placed the drilling rig in the wrong location. However, much of the physical evidence needed to reconstruct every technical decision had disappeared into the flooded mine.

The drilling equipment was lost, the mine could no longer be entered safely and the underground location of the original breach was inaccessible. Investigators could examine plans, coordinates and testimony, but they could not inspect the complete accident site in its original condition.

The companies pursued claims and counterclaims over the destruction.

In 1983, Diamond Crystal accepted a $32 million out-of-court settlement from Texaco and Wilson Brothers. Other property claims connected to the disaster were resolved separately. The settlement ended major portions of the litigation without producing a public trial that assigned every part of the accident to one definitive error.

The salt mine never reopened. Once flooded, its underground chambers were permanently lost as a working industrial site.

The Lake That Returned Was Permanently Different

Lake Peigneur refilled, but the disaster had redrawn its shoreline, depth and ecosystem.

A lake once known for being exceptionally shallow now contained one of Louisiana’s deepest underwater areas. Salt water brought through the reversed canal changed the types of plants and animals that could live there.

The Diamond Crystal mine remained beneath the lake, filled with water, abandoned equipment and debris carried down during the collapse. The drilling rigs, barges and sections of land that vanished became part of a landscape that could no longer be fully inspected.

Jefferson Island survived, and the nearby gardens eventually reopened. Historical film preserved by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette shows the damaged landscape, eyewitness interviews and the effort to restore the property after the accident.

The Lake Peigneur disaster remains remarkable not only because of what disappeared, but because of the chain reaction connecting two separate industries.

A drilling crew working on the surface encountered a salt mine operating far below. Once the protective barrier between them was broken, ordinary lake water became the force that expanded the damage.

It dissolved the salt.

The widening passage drained the lake.

The falling water level reversed the canal.

The returning salt water then refilled a basin that had been permanently transformed.

An oil rig, a second platform, 11 barges and sections of the surrounding land vanished during the process.

Yet every drilling worker and miner escaped.

Lake Peigneur returned after the disaster, but the shallow freshwater lake that had existed on the morning of November 20, 1980, was gone forever.
