
The Keycard in the Rain
“That’s not my aunt.”
The little girl whispered it so softly I almost missed it.
Rain slapped the glass doors behind her. The kind of cold highway rain that turns headlights into long white scratches and makes every traveler look guilty when they step inside.
I was standing by the vending machine, waiting for burned coffee to drip into a paper cup, when the woman in the cream coat grabbed the girl’s wrist.

She smiled at the motel clerk.

I stepped closer.

Lily made a sound.
“My mom.”
The photo showed a tired young woman with the same eyes as the girl.

Ray whispered, “Sarah Parker.”
I looked at him.
“You know her?”
He nodded slowly.
