Until the door opened.
No one had seen the little girl come in. That was the thing that no one could quite explain afterward. The bell above the door chimed when it opened — it always did — but somehow, she had simply appeared. Standing just inside the entrance, barefoot on the mat, clutching that one-eyed doll, blinking at the brightness and warmth of the room like someone emerging from a long stretch of cold and dark.

Cheryl, standing two feet away, felt the floor tilt slightly beneath her.
“I didn’t — I mean, she was alone, and I thought—” she started.
“She is a child,” Whitmore said. He didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to. “Barefoot. Clearly distressed. She came through your door, which means she came seeking shelter or help. Your first response was to shout at her to leave.”
The diner had gone completely silent again. Every person at every table was listening, the pretense of eating or reading or scrolling abandoned entirely.

She stopped.
The female detective leaned forward slightly. “You threw it away?”
“In the kitchen trash,” Cheryl said quickly. “The can under the prep station. But — but Pete doesn’t empty it every day. Sometimes it sits for a week. If it was three weeks ago it’s long gone. But the receipt — we’d have a receipt from that table. Date, time, order. I could pull it.”
The detectives exchanged a look.

She set it on the table. Cheryl’s breath caught.

But his thumb pressed harder against the edge of the photograph. “Two days after that, she was gone.”
The little girl, across from him, had stopped eating. She was watching his face with the concentrated attention of a child who doesn’t understand the words being spoken but understands perfectly that something important is happening.
She reached across the table and put her small hand on top of his.
He looked down at her hand.
And for the first time since Cheryl had approached the booth, the old man’s composure showed its seams.

“We need to find that key,” the male detective said, already reaching for his radio.
“Room fourteen,” his partner said, reading from the zoomed photograph. “The number on the tag. Room fourteen.”
“The Garfield Motel,” Cheryl said suddenly.
Everyone looked at her.
“The plastic tag — that color, that font. I’ve seen it before. The Garfield uses those tags for their room lockboxes. It’s the only place in this town that still does.” She swallowed. “It’s on Route 9. Right near where they found her. Found the little girl, I mean. This morning.”
The detectives were already moving.
Room Fourteen
The Garfield Motel had not been updated since approximately 1987. The door swung open.

Anna had known she was in danger.

And called Whitmore.

The detective looked at her steadily.
“More than enough,” she said. “It took us three weeks to get close to this. She did it in three months, alone, with no badge and no backup. She documented everything.” A pause. “There will be arrests by morning.”
Silence settled between them.

The detective didn’t rush to comfort her. She let the statement sit for a moment, the way honest statements deserve to sit.
