In August 1835, readers in New York opened a newspaper and encountered what appeared to be an extraordinary scientific announcement. A respected British astronomer, the reports claimed, had built a revolutionary telescope in South Africa and discovered life on the Moon.
The articles described forests, beaches, enormous crystals and unfamiliar animals in remarkable detail. Before the series ended, readers were introduced to its most memorable inhabitants: intelligent, winged humanoids that resembled men with bat-like wings.
The reports looked less like fantasy than a dispatch from a distant observatory. They used technical explanations, named a genuine scientist and claimed to come from an established scientific journal.
But the discoveries were fiction. The six-part newspaper series became known as the Great Moon Hoax of 1835, an elaborate satire written by journalist Richard Adams Locke and presented in the language of serious science.

The Newspaper Report That Looked Like Science
The first installment appeared in The Sun, a New York penny newspaper, on August 25, 1835. Five more followed, with the final part appearing on August 31.
Rather than announce winged moon people immediately, the series built its story in stages. It began by describing a supposed technological breakthrough made by Sir John Herschel, one of the best-known astronomers of his time.
The reports claimed to have been reprinted from a supplement to the Edinburgh Journal of Science. They were attributed to “Dr. Andrew Grant,” presented as one of Herschel’s associates.
Both details added distance between the newspaper and the discovery. The Sun appeared to be passing along a respected European scientific report rather than asking readers to trust one of its own reporters.
There was a problem with that chain of authority. The supposed supplement did not exist, the journal had already stopped publishing, and Andrew Grant was a fictional character. The articles were written by Richard Adams Locke, who worked for The Sun.
Locke did not construct the story from nonsense alone. He surrounded his inventions with enough accurate information to make them appear plausible.
His fictional report referred to real astronomers, authentic scientific debates and recognizable optical principles. It described the equipment with a level of precision that could impress a general reader without giving an expert enough time to examine every claim.
At the center of the story was an impossible telescope. Locke described an instrument with a lens 24 feet across and weighing more than seven tons. It was supposedly powerful enough to reveal objects on the Moon measuring only about 18 inches.
The imaginary system did more than magnify the lunar surface. A “hydro-oxygen microscope” allegedly projected the telescope’s images onto a wall, allowing Herschel and his assistants to observe the Moon as though they were watching an enormous scientific display.
No such instrument existed. The technology described in the articles was far beyond what could be built in 1835. Yet its measurements, components and operating process gave the invention the appearance of engineering rather than magic.
The Impossible Creatures Readers Were Shown
Once the telescope had been established, each installment carried readers deeper into an increasingly elaborate lunar world.
The reports described dark basalt rock, forests, lakes, valleys, beaches and immense formations resembling amethyst crystals. These landscapes were not presented as poetic speculation. They were cataloged as though an observatory team were recording a newly discovered continent.
Then the animals appeared.
Readers were told of birds, horned creatures, bison-like animals and beavers that walked on two legs. Some descriptions combined familiar Earth species with one unusual feature, a technique that made the lunar wildlife easier to picture.
The most famous discovery was introduced later in the series. The telescope supposedly revealed groups of furry, winged humanoids that could walk upright and communicate with one another.
Locke gave them the scientific-sounding name Vespertilio-homo, commonly remembered as the “man-bats” of the Great Moon Hoax. Their behavior, appearance and surroundings were described with the same observational confidence used for rocks and vegetation.
Illustrations strengthened the fantasy. A surviving 1835 lithograph held by the Library of Congress shows human-bat figures, unicorn-like animals and other imaginary creatures on the lunar surface. A notation on the print records that it was deposited for copyright on August 29, while the newspaper series was still running.
Later pamphlets and international editions produced even more elaborate images. The pictures gave readers something memorable and apparently concrete to associate with the densely written reports. Even when the original scientific language was shortened or translated, the lunar creatures remained instantly understandable.
Why Sir John Herschel’s Name Made It Credible
The most effective part of the hoax was not the telescope or the bat-men. It was the use of a real astronomer whose actual circumstances closely matched the fictional setting.
Sir John Herschel was not an invented authority. He was a respected mathematician and astronomer who had traveled to the Cape of Good Hope to study the southern sky.
Royal Society records confirm that Herschel was living in the region from 1834 to 1838. His surviving correspondence describes genuine astronomical work conducted with a 20-foot reflector that was operating by early 1834.
That kernel of truth gave Locke a nearly perfect foundation.
Many readers knew that Herschel was in South Africa with advanced observational equipment. Communication across the Atlantic was slow, making it difficult to obtain an immediate denial. The fictional discoveries therefore arrived from a distant but believable place, attached to a scientist who was genuinely doing important work there.
Locke also avoided presenting the articles as Herschel’s own direct statement. The claims came through the fictional Andrew Grant and the supposedly republished scientific supplement. Each additional layer made verification harder while preserving the astronomer’s authority.
The series worked because its inventions were attached to facts that readers could recognize. Herschel existed. His expedition existed. His observatory existed. The deception began only when the reports described what his telescope had supposedly found.
How the Hoax Spread Beyond New York
The six installments turned the discovery into a continuing event rather than a single unbelievable headline.
Readers who accepted the first report had already invested in the telescope and Herschel’s authority before the most fantastic creatures appeared. Each new installment promised a clearer view, a stranger animal or a more advanced form of lunar life.
That structure created suspense. It also gave other newspapers time to discuss, question or repeat the claims while The Sun continued publishing new material.
The response was not uniform. It would be too simple to say that every reader believed the reports. Some recognized exaggeration or suspected a joke. Others accepted at least part of the story because it appeared beneath the surface of scientific reporting.
What can be documented is that the tale escaped its original newspaper. It was reprinted and discussed in the United States and Europe, then repackaged in pamphlets, translations and illustrated editions. The Smithsonian notes that the story continued to be republished during the nineteenth century, long after its fictional nature had become known.
One surviving Italian adaptation, illustrated by Leopoldo Galluzzo, demonstrates how freely later publishers expanded the imagery. These editions helped transform a brief New York newspaper sensation into a lasting piece of popular culture.
Within weeks of the final installment, the reports were being dismissed as a hoax. Locke’s satire had been aimed in part at writers who used scientific language to support speculative claims about inhabited worlds, particularly the ideas associated with Scottish minister and popular science writer Thomas Dick.
Locke expected the increasingly extravagant story to expose that style of reasoning. Instead, many readers focused on the apparent discovery and missed the target of the joke.
Why the Story Still Feels Modern
The Great Moon Hoax succeeded without instant communication, digital editing or social media. Its tools were a respected name, technical vocabulary, an impressive visual concept and a story divided into suspenseful installments.
Its most important lesson is not simply that nineteenth-century readers were gullible. They were responding to signals people still use when judging information.
The report named an authority.
It appeared in a familiar news format.
It included precise measurements.
It claimed to originate from a specialized publication.
It mixed confirmed facts with inventions.
And it offered vivid details that readers could easily repeat to someone else.
The illustrations added another powerful layer. Once the lunar animals could be seen on paper, they became more memorable than the complicated chain of sourcing behind them. The images were genuine historical prints, but the creatures they depicted were never evidence of an astronomical discovery.
The hoax also benefited from escalation. Readers were not asked to accept winged humanoids in the opening sentence. First they received a new telescope, then lunar geology, then vegetation, then animals and finally intelligent beings.
Each step prepared the audience for the next.
By the time the story reached its impossible conclusion, the series had already established its own internal authority. Scientific language made the fantasy sound measurable, Herschel’s real expedition made the setting credible, and serialization encouraged readers to follow the discovery as it unfolded.
No bat-men lived on the Moon. No gigantic telescope produced images of lunar forests or upright beavers. Sir John Herschel had nothing to do with the reports published under the shadow of his reputation.
Yet the Great Moon Hoax endured because its method was more sophisticated than a simple false headline. It built credibility first, rewarded curiosity repeatedly and allowed a sensational story to borrow the appearance of documented science.
Nearly two centuries later, that formula remains familiar: begin with something true, surround the invention with authority, and give the audience a story too remarkable not to share.
